Simple Grace
by Sarak Ardestani
You probably won't find the reigning
Ms. Corporate Virginia
wearing her tiara
around town. A local
resident of Great
Falls, VA, Beth Jannery is
better
recognized by what she has
to say. You'll
know you've spotted the
incognito
pageant diva, when she gets
you into a
conversation about your
life's purpose.
Jannery, who is also a
published author,
has a special talent for
bringing people's
attention to their inner
yearnings.
“There's something more we
can be doing
and sometimes it gnaws at
us;” Jannery
said.
In one of her blogs,
Jannery describes
her own purpose, “I want to
help those
who seek their purpose. To
give to
someone fuels me.”
Through her book series,
Simple Grace,
Jannery encourages readers
to
appreciate the often
unappreciated
moments in life. Her
latest release,
Simple Grace - Daily Joys,
centers on
how to slow down and shift
focus.
“With economic disaster on
our minds,
there's not much
appreciation going on,”
Jannery said. “People are
wrapped up
with what they are losing,
and what they
don't have anymore.”
The book's chapters are
divided into
seasons. “I created a
model to carry
people through the year.
There are daily
examples of what you're
overlooking in
your life,” Jannery said.
Similar to Simple Grace -
Daily Joys,
Jannery's life reads much
like a book.
When you flip past the
cover, you'll find
different chapters that are
seemingly
unrelated, but which weave
together
with the simple grace she
writes about.
Each metaphorical chapter
represents
different pieces of her
life: her role as a
mother of two daughters (8
and 3),
motivational speaker, book
consultant,
and supporter of women
survivors of
war (through Women for
Women
International).
Admittedly, the noted
inspirational speaker
didn't always
have it all figured out.
About ten years ago, when
she was in
her twenties, Jannery was
working as a
reporter, covering the
Department of
Defense and budget cycles.
That was
when she stopped and took a
close look
at her life, and realized
she wasn't being
her authentic self.
“I was off kilter. I was so
full of ego. I
didn't feel fulfilled at
all. I had no grace
in my life.”
After hitting that low
point, Jannery
gradually figured out how
to pull some
grace into her life.
“I had to go all the way
back and study
Tony Robbins and even the
Tao and
Buddhism…the ancient
teachings. I
used those teachings in my
own life and
found they worked.”
The wisdom that has guided
her since
then includes the insight
she obtains
from her mentors.
“My mentors come in really
funny sizes,
and shapes, and colors,”
Jannery said.
“When I think of my mentor,
I think of a
random stranger that you
could meet
that may say two or three
words to you.
And it causes a shift in
me.”
The next chapter in
Jannery's life
entails her next book,
Simple Grace -
Soul Embrace. It's
something she has
just started writing, and
will include
daily inspirational
meditations.
“I want slow people down
just for a
minute…even for that brief
moment in
the day - so that they can
actually be in
that day.
